(Kitco News) - Kelvin Dushnisky will be leaving his position as president of Barrick Gold Corp. (NYSE, TSX: ABX) to become chief executive officer of AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. (NYSE: AU; JSE: ANG; ASX: AGG), the companies announced Monday.

Dushnisky will depart from Barrick, the world’s largest gold producer, at the end of August, the company said. He joined Barrick in 2002 and held a number of senior positions before being appointed president in 2015.

AngloGold said he will start his new position on Sept. 1. Dushnisky will relocate to Johannesburg, South Africa, where AngloGold Ashanti is based, and succeed CEO Srinivasan Venkatakrishnan, who is leaving at the end of August for a role at London-based Vedanta Resources.

“Following an extremely competitive global search, we’re pleased to name someone of Kelvin’s caliber and experience to lead this organization,” said Sipho Pityana, chairman of AngloGold Ashanti.

Dushnisky will bring AngloGold “a deep understanding of operating a large, complex global portfolio of mining assets and projects, and a keen familiarity of an evolving geopolitical landscape,” Pityana said.

Barrick will announce a successor for Dushnisky in “due course,” the company said in its announcement.

“His passion for building enduring, trust-based relationships with host governments, communities, shareholders and other partners has made an important contribution to Barrick’s growth and development, said Barrick Executive Chairman John L. Thornton.

Dushnisky called his 16 years at Barrick a “privilege” in which he “had the unique opportunity to work alongside some of the most talented and dedicated people in the industry.” He also commented that AngloGold “has a strong portfolio of assets and an exciting pipeline of organic growth opportunities.”
