Editor’s Note: Kitco News will be releasing a daily feature from July 14 to July 19 focusing on the world's top five silver producing countries, which will include a daily graphic of the country’s largest producing mines.
(Kitco News) - Silver production is not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about Australia’s mining sector; the country is more known for its gold, base metals and iron ore production.
Half of the silver produced in the country comes from the Cannington mine, billed as the world’s largest silver and lead producing mine.
The rest is a result of silver production as a by-product, with Wonawinta being the country’s largest primary silver producing mine.
Roseberry Base, Broken Hill and McArthur River are all primarily zinc producing mines.
Australian silver mine supply has trended downwards over the last decade, peaking at 77 million ounces in 2005.
