A Sense Of ‘Renaissance’ In The Mining Sector As PDAC 2019 Wraps For The Year

(Kitco News) - The Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) wrapped up on Wednesday, reporting outstanding attendance and a sense of a “renaissance” in the mining sector.

This year saw 25,843 attendees from more than 130 countries, the PDAC said in a press release on Wednesday.

The world’s largest mining convention, held annually in Toronto, has reported renewed optimism and excitement from the attendees this year.

“After my 44th straight year attending the PDAC Convention, the enthusiasm I saw from exhibitors and attendees in 2019 was among the best yet,” said PDAC President Glenn Mullan. “Although we continue to face economic challenges and uncertainty, the mineral exploration and mining industry is experiencing a renaissance and renewed sense of confidence, highlighting its resilience once more.”

This year’s PDAC highlights included a surprise visit from Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who focused his invite-only talk on mining, innovation, cleaner technologies and Indigenous partnerships.

The agenda this year included many timely topics, such as commodities outlook, new technology to power the future of mining, exploration activities, metal deficits, lack of investment, precious metals outlook, and millennials and mining.

In respect to millennials, there were many students in attendance, with many recent graduates presenting at the PDAC as well as looking for job opportunities.

The always popular #DisruptMining event also lived up to the hype surrounding the annual competition. The entertaining live ‘Shark tank’-style finale on Sunday ended with Andritz’s project to train AI to operate a mineral facility winning Goldcorp’s $1-million prize.
