China's Henan Shenhuo starts construction of 900,000 T aluminium smelter

BEIJING, May 8 (Reuters) -


* China's Henan Shenhuo Group has commenced construction of an aluminium smelting project with an annual capacity of 900,000 tonnes in southwestern province of Yunnan, the company said in a statement on Tuesday
* The project will involve a total investment of around 6.75 billion yuan ($996.59 million) and is expected to be launched in two years; the first phase will have a capacity of at 451,100 tonnes per annum
* The project is the latest case illustrating Yunnan's increasing popularity as a location for aluminium smelters in China due to abundant hydropower resources, which is cheaper and cleaner compared to coal-fired power
* ($1 = 6.7731 Chinese yuan)
