(Kitco News) - Komatasu delivered a hybrid load-haul-dump in April to Codelco's El Tiente Mine in Chile.

The equipment, a HD LHD 18, will be used for loading, hauling, and dumping ore. The model does not have a gearbox nor mechanical actuated components. It uses diesel only for driving electricity generation. The unit will save fuel and also increase productivity by up to 20%, the company said.

"This innovative equipment offers cutting-edge technology to the underground mining field and will become the industry's turning point. Due to its economy and efficiency features, we are sure it will have a beneficial impact on underground mining," said Francisco RodrĂguez, Komatsu Chile's Underground Mining Manager.

The equipment meets Codelco's "green copper" goals: using less fuel and reducing emissions, especially in underground operations.
