(Kitco News) - Iamgold announced that it temporarily suspended mining activities at its Rosebel property in Suriname after one unauthorized miner died following an incident with local police.
There was little detail on the altercation. The company said that police were responding to unauthorized artisanal mining within the Rosebel concession.
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased at this difficult time,” the company said in a press release. “To ensure the security of our workforce, we have temporarily suspended mining activities while the mill continues to operate.”
The company noted that after the incident, the mine’s Emergency Response Team was immediately activated. Iamgold added that there will be an investigation into the incident, which also resulted in some equipment damage.
