Underground Train Collision Kills Worker At Implats

Kitco News

One worker was killed and another was injured at Impala Platinum Holdings's No.1 (Implats) shaft in Rustenburg earlier this week, reports the African News Agency.

Underground locomotives carrying ore to a tipping area collided. A company official, Johan Theron, confirmed the death of Nelson Thipe and said work procedures may have not been followed:

"It looks like Mr Thipe's locomotive was traveling from the underground shaft tipping area, back towards the workings to collect another load of ore," Theron told the African News Agency.

"Another fully loaded locomotive on route to the tipping seemingly failed to stop, against all standard safety protocol, at the demarcated place, before entering the tipping area."

The accident is being investigated.

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union is critical of the mine stating that there have been three accidents over three months and would like to see more strigent worker regulations at the operation.
