Barrick increasing supply of key commodities during coronavirus outbreak
(Kitco News) - Barrick Gold Corp. (NYSE: GOLD; TSX: ABX) said Friday that supplies to mines have not been impacted by the coronavirus outbreak around the world, but nevertheless the company is increasing its inventory of key commodities to levels higher than normal.
Companies in a number of other sectors have run into problems with production because virus-related cutbacks elsewhere have interrupted the flow of supplies needed for manufacturing.
Barrick issued a report saying it has increased its site-specific emergency-response plans and regional crisis-management plans to deal with any outbreak of COVID-19 at or near its mines around the world. Officials said the company was drawing on experiences gained while combating Ebola outbreaks around its African operations.
The company said it had counseled employees about the symptoms of the virus and the risk of contracting the infection. Access to each site is “strictly controlled” and visitors, employees and contractors are routinely screened before and on arrival, Barrick said, with emergency medical procedures and facilities are in place.
“Barrick is closely monitoring the situation, engaging with health authorities and tracking updates from the international medical community,” the company said in a prepared statement. “Thus far, it has not deemed it necessary to introduce any travel restrictions.”
