2020 was a historic year for the mining sector. Companies navigated the uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and worldwide lockdown measures, and still delivered unprecedented value for their investors.

Kitco Mining recognized the best of the best. Clive Johnson, chief executive officer at B2Gold (NYSE:BTG) and managing director Alex Dorsch at Chalice Mining (ASX:CHN) are Kitco Mining's CEO of the Year winners for 2020.

Dorsch won in the Exploration and Development Category. Johnson won in the Mining Category. Kitco News announced the winners in a special live YouTube broadcast Thursday at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Chalice Mining was recognized for its Julimar discovery, 70 km northeast of Perth. The discovery has sent Chalice on an astounding run, starting near 20 cents at the beginning of 2020 and finishing at over $4 by the end of the year. Dorsch's title is managing director, but he is being recognized as leader of the company.

There were seven other nominees in the Exploration and Development Category:

Adriatic Metals' Paul Cronin - Listed in the United Kingdom, Adriatic Metals (ASX:ADT) is advancing its Vareš Project in Bosnia & Herzegovina. The company recently announced a key permit for the high-grade silver project.

Great Bear's Chris Taylor - Great Bear Resources (TSX-V:GBR) is advancing its flagship Dixie project in Red Lake, Ontario. The company says the project has the potential to be a tier-one discovery.

Silver Crest Metals' N. Eric Fier - In November, SilverCrest (TSX:SIL) announced a new high-grade discovery at Las Chispas, located in Sonora, Mexico.

B2Gold was recognized for its superior company strategy and recognizing value that others overlooked. B2Gold has also expertly built and ran mines in a number of countries: Chile, Namibia, the Philippines and Mali.

There were four other nominees in the Mining Category:

Barrick Gold's Mark Bristow - Barrick (TSE:ABX) is the world's number two gold miner.

Jaguar Mining's Vernon Baker - The company (TSE:JAG) is a precious metal miner operating in Brazil.

To help select this year's winners, Kitco's editorial mining team convened a group of industry experts: Soar Financial's Kai Hoffmann, Sprott Global's Steve Todoruc and Cupel Advisory's Nikki Adshead-Bell. Brent Cook, senior advisor and founder of Exploration Insights, was also on the panel.

"The industry is filled with so many people who are making unique and out-sized efforts, often unsung. It was definitely a difficult decision this year," said Hoffmann.

Kitco Mining will make an in-kind donation on behalf of the winners and launch an awareness campaign to raise the profile of the charities of the winners' choice. Johnson asked to recognize the Rhino Gold Bar initiative. Dorsch asked to acknowledge the Association of Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades in Western Australia.

"Kitco Mining's 'CEO of the Year' celebrates the accomplishments of leaders, executives, and their management teams behind the year's most outstanding mining initiatives and achievements. This annual awards program recognizes individuals and teams who set industry benchmarks for distinction," said Kitco's Media Director John Dourekas.
