(Kitco News) - MGX Minerals (CSE:XMG), a diversified Canadian resource and technology company with interests in advanced metals, industrial minerals, and energy technologies, announced today that a joint internal and external review is underway of existing advanced small modular nuclear reactor technologies ("SMR") and related opportunities.

In its statement, MGX said it is currently reviewing existing SMR designs, fuel and related commodities. In particular, the company said it is interested in TRI - structural ISOtropic particle fuel ("TRISO") reactors, and related mining and fuel processing.

SMR technology has recently begun to attract interest from the mineral resources and mining sector.

KGHM, the Polish copper mining giant, announced yesterday that it has signed a joint commitment with the companies NuScale Power, an American leader amongst producers of small modular reactors technology, and with PBE Molecule, to develop small nuclear reactor technology that will replace existing coal-based energy sources at its copper production plants in Poland.

On the same day, Cameco, a major uranium producer, announced that it has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with GE Hitachi, GEH SMR Technologies, and Synthos Green Energy (SGE), to evaluate the potential establishment of a uranium fuel supply chain in Canada capable of servicing a potential fleet of BWRX-300 small modular reactors in Poland.
