Gold production in Peru down 9.4% in March, ministry says
(Kitco News) - According to the latest figures from the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Peru (MINEM), gold production in Peru, the world’s eighth largest gold producing country, was 7,460 kg in March 2022, a decline of 9.4% compared to 8,232 kg mined in March 2021.
MINEM said that similarly, the domestic gold production in the first quarter of 2022 showed a year-on-year decrease of 2.1% as a result of lower production recorded by Minera Aurifera Retamas S.A. (-9.9%) and Compañía Minera Ares S.A.C. (-5.7), both due to a lower ore grade.
At the company level, Compañía Minera Poderosa S.A. maintained its first position accounting for 9.7% of total gold production in Peru, followed by Minera Yanacocha S.R.L. (9.0%) and Minera Aurífera Retamas S.A. (7.3%).
At the regional level, La Libertad kept the first position accounting for 32.5% of Peru’s total gold production, followed by Cajamarca (20.9%) and Arequipa (18.7%).
