(Kitco News) - According to the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Peru (MINEM), copper production in Peru, the world’s second largest copper producing country, amounted to 198,467 tonnes in June 2022, up 8.6% compared to June 2021 (182,711 tonnes).

Similarly, Peru’s copper production in January-June 2022 of 1,096,655 tonnes registered a year-on-year increase of 1.2%.

MINEM said that this positive performance was mainly due to an increase in copper output by Antamina Mining Company S.A. (+5.5%), Mining Company Cerro Verde S.A.A. (+12.8%) and Minera Chinalco Peru S.A. (+7.6%).

At the company level, Compañía Minera Antamina S.A. is first with a 21.8% share in total Peru’s copper output, followed by Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A. (20.6%) and Southern Peru Copper Corporation (13.8%).

The ministry added that at the regional level, Áncash is first with a 22.0% share in the country’s total copper production, followed by Arequipa (20.7%) and Cusco (10.4%).
