Copper production in Peru up 8.3% in October, ministry says
(Kitco News) - According to the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Peru (MINEM), copper production in Peru, the world’s second largest copper producing country, amounted to 232,464 tonnes in October 2022, up 8.3% compared to October 2021 (214,623 tonnes).
MINEM said that this positive performance was mainly due to higher production by major local copper mining companies, including Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A. (+7.0%), Southern Peru Copper Corporation (+3.9%) and Minera Las
Bambas S.A. (+7.5%).
The ministry noted that in October 2022, Southern Peru Copper Corporation (produced 32,879 tonnes of copper), Marcobre S.A.C. (12,024 tonnes) and Hudbay Peru S.A.C. (10,561 tonnes) registered their highest levels of production so far this year.
At the company level, Compañía Minera Antamina S.A. is first with a 20.1% share in total Peru’s copper output, followed by Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A. (19.2%) and Southern Peru Copper Corporation (14.1%).
MINEM added that at the regional level, Áncash is first with a 20.3% share in the country’s total copper production, followed by Arequipa (19.4%) and Apurímac (10.7%).
