(Kitco News) - According to the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Peru (MINEM), gold production in Peru, the world’s tenth largest gold producing country, was 7,319 kg in January 2023, down 6.8% compared to 7,850 kg mined in January 2022.

MINEM said that this negative performance was primarily due to the lower production reported by Compañía Minera Poderosa S.A. (-6.9%), Minera Yanacocha S.R.L. (-23.6%) and Compañía de Minas Buenaventura S.A.A. (-11.8%).

At the company level, Compañía Minera Poderosa S.A. maintained its first position accounting for 9.1% of total gold production in Peru, followed by Minera Yanacocha S.R.L. (7.5%) and Minera Aurífera Retamas S.A. (7.1%).

At the regional level, La Libertad kept the first position accounting for 32.7% of Peru’s total gold production, followed by Arequipa (21.6%) and Cajamarca (21.2%).
