(Kitco News) - The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics of Peru (INEI) announced on Thursday that the domestic mining and hydrocarbons sector expanded by 17.41% in April 2023 compared to April 2022.

In a press release, INEI said that this improvement was a result of the positive performance in the domestic metallic mining subsector, which increased due to higher production of copper (31.4%), zinc (31.4%), lead (9.1%), iron (2.9%) and silver (0.2%).

This was partially offset by lower production of molybdenum (-2.9%), gold (-1.4%) and tin (-0.9%).

INEI added that Peru’s hydrocarbons subsector contracted by 0.34% due to lower extraction of natural gas liquids (-5.3%); this was partially offset by the increase in extraction of natural gas (6.1%) and crude oil (1.6%).
