Top 10 largest uranium mining companies in 2022 - report

(Kitco News) - Kitco ranked the world’s top 10 largest uranium mining companies based on production data reported by the World Nuclear Association for 2022. In 2022, the top 10 uranium companies accounted for about 92% of the world's total uranium mine production.

Kazakhstan’s Kazatomprom is the world’s largest uranium producer. In 2022, the company’s attributable uranium production amounted to 11,373 tU. Kazatomprom uses highly efficient and low-cost in-situ recovery mining method. The company has priority access to one of the world’s largest uranium resource bases.

The company also enjoys the status as Kazakhstan’s national operator for the export and import of uranium and its compounds, nuclear power plant fuel, special equipment and technologies.

Canada’s Cameco is the world’s second largest uranium producer. The company has interests in tier-one mining and milling operations that have the licensed capacity to produce more than 30 million pounds (Cameco’s share) of uranium concentrates annually, backed by more than 469 million pounds of proven and probable mineral reserves.

Cameco is also a leading supplier of uranium refining, conversion and fuel manufacturing services. In 2022, the company’s attributable production was 5,675 tU.

French nuclear giant Orano sits third with 5,519 tU produced in 2022. The company’s uranium production sites are located in three countries: Canada, Niger and Kazakhstan.

China’s CGN Mining sits fourth. The company produced 4,627 tU in 2022.

Uranium One is fifth with 4,454 tU produced in 2022. Uranium One - which was formed in 2005 as a Canadian public company - is now controlled by the Russian state nuclear giant Rosatom and owns stakes in a diverse portfolio of assets worldwide, including Kazakhstan, Tanzania, Namibia, and other countries.

Uzbekistan’s state-controlled mining company Navoi, one of the world’s largest producers of gold and uranium, produced 3,300 tU in 2022. Navoi uses in-situ recovery mining method to produce uranium at its mines.
