How the Platinum Spot Price Works
The platinum spot price is the U.S.-dollar price of one troy ounce for immediate delivery, set by exchange futures and over-the-counter dealing in centres such as New York, London and Zurich.
The platinum market is thinner than gold or silver, so quotes can move sharply on supply news from the small number of producing regions. Physical platinum bullion — bars and coins, typically 999.5 fine — carries a premium over spot like other precious metals.
What Moves the Platinum Price
Automotive demand. Platinum's largest single use is in catalytic converters, historically concentrated in diesel vehicles. As automakers substitute platinum for more expensive palladium in gasoline engines, that substitution flow has become a price driver in its own right.
Concentrated supply. Around 70% of mined platinum comes from South Africa, so power availability, labor actions and mine economics in one country move the global price in a way true of no other major metal.
Jewelry and investment. Platinum is a major jewelry metal — particularly in Asia — and trades as an investment metal through bars, coins and ETFs. Unusually among precious metals, platinum has spent long periods priced below gold despite a far smaller annual mine supply — a fact that itself drives investor interest.
Platinum Purity and Hallmarks
Platinum jewelry is usually of high purity: common hallmarks are Pt950 (95% platinum) and Pt900 (90%). Investment bullion is typically 999.5 fine. Fineness marks state platinum content in parts per thousand, the same convention used for gold and silver.
| Fineness | Purity | Common Mark | What It Typically Is | Value per Gram | Value per Troy Ounce |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 999 Pure Platinum | 99.99% Platinum | 999 | High-purity platinum bullion | $60.48 | $1,881.00 |
| 950 Platinum | 95.00% Platinum | 950 or Pt950 | Most platinum jewelry | $57.45 | $1,786.95 |
| 900 Platinum | 90.00% Platinum | 900 or Pt900 | Some platinum jewelry | $54.43 | $1,692.90 |
| 850 Platinum | 85.00% Platinum | 850 or Pt850 | Lower-purity platinum jewelry | $51.40 | $1,598.85 |

Platinum Price History
Platinum's all-time high came in the March 2008 spike near $2,300 per ounce. Platinum traded above gold for most of the 2000s and below it for most of the years since — the platinum-gold relationship is a story in itself, trackable on the gold price page.
About Platinum
Platinum is one of the rarest major metals — annual mine production is a small fraction of gold’s — and among the densest and most corrosion-resistant, which is why "platinum" became shorthand for a standard above gold. Beyond autocatalysts and jewelry, it’s essential in laboratory equipment, glassmaking, petroleum refining and medical devices. Purity: investment platinum is typically .9995 fine; platinum jewelry is commonly marked 950 (95% pure).
