MILAN, May 5 (Reuters) - Italy should use proceeds from
a potential tax it is considering imposing on banks' profits to
tackle growing inequalities which pose the biggest social
challenge to the country, the head of Intesa Sanpaolo said on Friday.
In comments after Italy's biggest bank posted a much higher
than expected first quarter profit and raised its goal for the
year, CEO Carlo Messina said the government was mulling whether
to tax more income banks are reaping from rising interest rates.
"We will respect any decision the government takes. At the
same time we hope such higher taxes, were they to materialise,
are used ... to help those in deepest need."
