ROMA, Jan 31 (Reuters) - Wage growth in Italy remained
extremely subdued in December despite sky-high consumer price
inflation, data showed on Tuesday, further eroding workers'
purchasing power.
Average hourly wages in December edged up 0.1% from the
month before and were up 1.5% year-on-year, national statistics
bureau ISTAT reported.
That compared with an annual inflation rate of 12.3% in the
same month, based on Italy's EU-harmonised consumer price index.
Over the whole of 2022, wages were up 1.1% from the year
earlier, compared with an average inflation rate of 8.7%,
producing the widest gap between wage growth and price growth
for any year since ISTAT's series began in 2001.
