(Kitco News) - Battery recycling economics depends upon the recovery of expensive elements, but what if those elements are substituted away with cheaper materials?

Neometals Managing Director and CEO Christopher Reed spoke to Kitco on Tuesday. Neometals (ASX:NMT) has a range of technologies in the critical metal space with a focus on battery recycling. Last year the company was selected to help Mercedes Benz with the carmaker's recycling.

Due to the rising cost of critical metals, car manufacturers are attempting to make batteries with cheaper materials. Sodium-ion batteries are on the rise, which displaces lithium. This year Tesla announced it was going to make car engines without rare earth elements.

Reed says the efforts are still nascent.

"It's taken 30 years for lithium-ion batteries to get where they are now," said Reed. "They'll be the dominant chemistry for EVs for the foreseeable future."
