How the Rhodium Spot Price Works
Rhodium has no exchange-traded futures market. It trades dealer-to-dealer, and the quote shown on this page is a bid price per troy ounce in U.S. dollars, updated through the trading day.
Because trading is dealer-based and volumes are small, quoted prices can gap sharply between updates — larger day-to-day steps than exchange-traded metals are normal for rhodium.
About Rhodium
Rhodium is the scarcest of the major platinum-group metals. It is not mined in its own right: essentially all supply arrives as a by-product of platinum and nickel mining, with South Africa the dominant source, so annual production is tiny and cannot expand when prices rise.
Its defining use is in three-way catalytic converters, where rhodium is uniquely effective at breaking down nitrogen oxides. It also plates white-gold and silver jewelry — the bright, hard "rhodium plating" finish — and serves in glassmaking and chemical catalysts.
A very small market supplied inelastically and consumed by one industry has made rhodium the most dramatically volatile precious metal, with price moves far larger in percentage terms than gold or silver.
Rhodium Price FAQ
- How is the rhodium price set?
- Dealer-to-dealer trading rather than an exchange. The quote on this page is a bid price per troy ounce in U.S. dollars.
- What is rhodium used for?
- Mostly automotive catalytic converters, where it reduces nitrogen-oxide emissions. It also plates white-gold and silver jewelry and serves in industrial catalysts and glassmaking.
- Why is rhodium so expensive and volatile?
- Supply is a small by-product stream of platinum and nickel mining that cannot expand quickly, while demand is concentrated in one industry — small changes on either side move the price sharply.
- Is rhodium jewelry solid rhodium?
- No. Rhodium is used as a thin plating over white gold or silver for brightness and scratch resistance — solid rhodium items are extremely rare.
