Turkey - Factors to Watch on Feb 17

ISTANBUL, Feb 17 (Reuters) - Here are news, reports and events that may affect Turkish financial markets on Friday. The lira traded at 18.8560 against the dollar at 0426 GMT, little changed unchanged from a close of 18.8550 on Thursday. The main BIST 100 share index closed 1.17% higher at 5,000.58 points on Thursday.


GLOBAL MARKETS Asian equities slipped on Friday, while the dollar hovered around six-week highs as economic data and hawkish comments from Federal Reserve officials revived fears that the U.S. central bank will stick to its monetary tightening path. EARTHQUAKE International aid agencies are stepping up efforts to help millions of homeless people, many sleeping in tents, mosques, schools or cars, 11 days after a massive earthquake hit Turkey and Syria killing more than 42,000. Two people were reported to have been pulled alive from the rubble in Turkey on Thursday, but such rescues have become increasingly rare, leaving anger to smoulder as hope dies. CENTRAL BANK


Turkey's central bank has asked banks to widen the spread for gold and foreign currency transactions to curb foreign currency demand, two sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Thursday.


FINLAND, SWEDEN NATO BIDS NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday the "time is now" for Turkey to ratify applications by Finland and Sweden to join the defence alliance.
