SOUTH AFRICAN MARKETS South Africa's rand firmed on Friday, helped by strong Chinese data and a positive PMI return that showed South Africa's private sector activity recovering from a downturn. On the stock market, the Top-40 index and the broader all-share index closed about 1% higher. GLOBAL MARKETS Asian shares edged up on Monday while bond markets held their breath ahead of an update on the U.S. rate outlook from the world's most powerful central banker, and a jobs report that could decide if the next hike needs to be super-sized. WALL STREET Wall Street rallied on Friday to end a volatile week, as U.S. Treasury yields eased and economic data helped investors look past the growing likelihood that the Federal Reserve will have to keep its restrictive policy in place until late in the year. GOLD Gold prices ticked lower on Monday as central banks indicated further interest rate hikes to tame stubbornly high inflation, diminishing bullion's appeal as a hedge against price increases.
