Copper deficit deepens as China tightens control, according to Osisko CEO
Osisko Metals (TSX: OM; OTCQB: OMZNF) CEO Robert Wares speaks with Kitco Mining’s Ernest Hoffman at Xplor 2025 in Montreal about copper’s bullish long-term outlook, emerging supply deficits, and the company’s Gaspé Copper project. “The outlook for copper is not changed. It’s still very bullish,” Wares said. “Most analysts agree that we need to add about 10 million tons of copper metal to production over the next 10 to 15 years, and we’re nowhere near being able to meet that demand.” Wares highlights a 7% decline in global production over the past 18 months and warns that China’s control of refining capacity poses a long-term security risk for North America. He supports Canada’s C-5 initiative to accelerate permitting for “nation-building projects” and says Gaspé’s ongoing drilling suggests a larger-than-expected system, with a new resource estimate due in February and 40,000 meters of additional drilling planned through 2026.
