Newmont’s Tom Palmer reflects on a decade of change in final interview
Tom Palmer, CEO of Newmont (NYSE: NEM; TSX: NGT), speaks with Kitco Mining’s Paul Harris in his final interview before stepping down on December 31. Palmer reflects on a decade that reshaped the company, from the Goldcorp acquisition and the Nevada Gold Mines joint venture to the integration of Newcrest in 2023 and the divestiture of six operations in 2024. He says the business he is handing to incoming CEO Natasha is positioned for long-term strength. “We now have 12 managed operations. Each of them has very long life ore bodies that we can confidently make decisions on a 20 to 30 year timeframe.” Palmer discusses how Newmont exceeded expectations in its divestiture program, returned more than $2.7 billion to shareholders this year, and rebuilt its portfolio around long-life assets and disciplined capital allocation. He also addresses the shift toward generalist investors, the sector’s consolidation pressures, the rise of digital gold, and the growing interest from buyers like Tether. As he transitions into an advisory role, Palmer outlines what he hopes to see from the gold mining industry in 2026.
