Copper’s next decade faces supply limits, says Rob McEwen
Rob McEwen, Executive Chair and Chief Owner of McEwen Mining (NYSE: MUX; TSX: MUX), spoke with Kitco Mining’s Paul Harris at the Future Minerals Forum 2026 in Riyadh about the forces driving copper’s rise as prices trade near $6 per pound. McEwen pointed to excitement around future uses, structural supply shortages, long development timelines, and a scarcity of major discoveries, noting that bringing a new copper project from discovery to production “might take you 15 years.” McEwen also discussed McEwen Copper’s Los Azules project in Argentina, highlighting a feasibility study completed last fall that showed an after-tax NPV of $2.94 billion at a $4.35 per pound copper price. With copper trading near current levels, he said the project’s economics improve significantly, adding that “at current prices, we’d have a gross margin in excess of 71%.” McEwen outlined a mine life of more than 20 years with expansion potential, capital costs of about $3.2 billion plus working capital, and a target to begin construction in late 2026 or early 2027, with production expected around 2030.
