Randy Smallwood: Gold is no longer a commodity, it’s a currency
Wheaton Precious Metals CEO Randy Smallwood says the company’s streaming model is positioned to outperform traditional miners as higher prices push operating costs higher across the sector. Speaking with Kitco News at VRIC 2026 in Vancouver, Smallwood said fixed streaming contracts allow Wheaton to avoid inflationary pressures faced by operators that are increasingly forced to mine lower-grade material. “We take the cost risk outta the investment,” Smallwood said, describing why the model provides stability in a high-price environment. Smallwood also discussed Wheaton’s newly secured Helo gold stream, calling the asset “a Canadian legend,” and outlined how streaming pays full net asset value while preserving shareholder upside. Looking ahead, he said Wheaton expects more than $3 billion in cash flow in 2026, giving the company flexibility to fund new gold, silver, and copper streams as development activity accelerates. Smallwood added that gold is no longer trading like a commodity. “It’s really a currency,” he said, pointing to sustained central bank demand reshaping the global market.
