Gold above $5,000 signals a breakdown in trust | Matthew Piepenburg

As gold pushes beyond $5,000 and silver continues its advance, Matthew Piepenburg says the real signal investors should be watching is not price momentum, but the erosion of trust across global bond and currency markets. Speaking with Kitco News at VRIC 2026 in Vancouver, the Von Greyerz partner pointed to rising yields in Japan, the US, and Europe as evidence that sovereign debt is being repriced and that confidence in so-called risk-free assets is weakening. Piepenburg argued that gold’s strength reflects decades of debt monetization and negative real rates rather than speculative excess. He said gold is increasingly being treated as a neutral settlement and collateral asset by central banks, particularly as confidence in fiat currencies erodes. While gold’s move has drawn comparisons to past bubbles, Piepenburg warned that what should concern investors most is not how high gold has gone, but what its rise says about the stability of the financial system itself.
