New Gold extends rainy river to 2035 as shareholders back Coeur deal
New Gold (NYSE American: NGD; TSX: NGD) has extended the mine life at Rainy River to 2035 and secured 99% shareholder approval for its acquisition by Coeur Mining, marking a pivotal shift in the company’s recovery. Speaking with Kitco Mining at the 35th BMO Global Metals, Mining & Critical Minerals Conference, CEO Patrick Godin said Rainy River’s open pit had previously been expected to end in 2027 and the underground in 2030 before exploration investment reshaped the long-term outlook. The transaction expands New Gold from a two-asset producer into a seven-asset, North America-focused portfolio with added silver exposure alongside gold and copper. Godin said the company prioritized execution and discipline during the turnaround. “We planned the mine and we mined the plan,” he said, describing a renewed focus on operational accountability. The combination reduces asset concentration risk and adds scale as consolidation and capital discipline remain central themes across the mining sector.
