Why I'm 80% in Cash and Still Not Buying Gold, Lobo Tiggre

(Kitco News) Lobo Tiggre, publisher of The Independent Speculator, says he is holding the largest cash position of his career, roughly 80%, and is still not buying gold or silver stocks even after the metal's sharp correction. Speaking with Kitco News at the Rule Symposium 2026 in Boca Raton, Tiggre said his selling discipline, driven by a system he calls the upside maximizer, triggered a broad sell into the rebound that followed gold's peak, not at the top and not in January, as is sometimes assumed. That has left him "locked and loaded" for the next cyclical low. He is unmoved by gold trading near $4,000, arguing "less high is not low," and noting that producers built on sub-$2,000 gold are now generating substantial cash flow at current prices. Tiggre said his base case is "a period of correction consolidation" before gold's next move higher, though he stressed that is "my expectation, not my prediction." He would not rule out a deeper decline, noting that a drawdown on the scale of 2011 or 1980 would take gold into the high $2,000s, adding, "if it drops under 3000, I'm just buying." For now, his capital is aimed elsewhere: copper is his highest-conviction trade, though at "six and change" he is waiting for an AI-driven pullback before buying; last week he made his first stock purchase in months, an oil name; and uranium, already his largest position, is trading below its long-term contract price, which he believes sets up a potential "snap move up" in the spot price.
