South African Markets - Factors to watch on March 7

JOHANNESBURG, March 7 (Reuters) - The following scheduled political and economic events, company announcements, equity and currency market moves may affect South African markets on Tuesday.


POLITICAL EVENTS South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday appointed a new electricity minister in an effort to try to solve the worst power cuts on record in the country, and he added several other allies to his cabinet ahead of a general election next year.

COMPANIES Shoprite results Nedbank Group posted a 20% rise in full year profit as the lender benefited from higher interest rates. Sibanye-Stillwater said on Tuesday it now controlled nearly 71% stake in New Century Resources .


SOUTH AFRICAN MARKETS South Africa's rand weakened on Monday ahead of a cabinet reshuffle in which President Cyril Ramaphosa is likely to name a new deputy. On the stock market, the blue-chip index of top 40 companies ended up 0.62% while the broader all-share index closed 0.52% higher. GLOBAL MARKETS Asian financial markets were little changed on Tuesday as investors awaited congressional testimony from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell due to start later in the day for clues on the central bank's next move on interest rates. WALL STREET The S&P 500 made little progress on Monday, closing slightly higher than its session low as U.S. Treasury yields pulled higher with investors braced for this week's testimony from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and the February jobs report. GOLD Gold prices rose marginally on Tuesday as investors awaited Congressional testimony by U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and monthly jobs data, both of which could influence the interest rate policy.
