Turkey - Factors to Watch on March 8

ISTANBUL, March 8 (Reuters) - Here are news, reports and events that may affect Turkish financial markets on Wednesday. The lira traded at 18.9230 against the dollar early on Wednesday, unchanged from its close on Tuesday. The lira is still close to its record low level it hit last week. The main BIST 100 share index closed 0.19% lower at 5,381.90 points on Tuesday.


GLOBAL MARKETS Asian shares fell sharply on Wednesday, while the dollar advanced after hawkish comments from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell raised the possibility of the U.S. central bank returning to large rate hikes to tackle sticky inflation.


ERDOGAN PROGRAMME President Tayyip Erdogan will hold talks with the leader of
nationalist MHP Devlet Bahceli (1100 GMT) and then meet with the president of Guinea Bissau Umaro Sissoco Embalo in Ankara (1200 GMT).


FOREIGN MINISTER Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu will meet with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian in Ankara and will hold a joint news conference (0815 GMT).


TURKEY'S OPPOSITION A call by Turkey's pro-Kurdish party for talks with an opposition alliance on supporting its joint candidate to challenge President Tayyip Erdogan in a May election has caused unease among some nationalist elements of the diverse union.
