Turkey - Factors to Watch on March 9

ISTANBUL, March 9 (Reuters) - Here are news, reports and events that may affect Turkish financial markets on Thursday. The lira traded at 18.9450 against the dollar at 0428 GMT on Thursday, weakening from its close of 18.9300 on Wednesday. The main BIST 100 share index closed 1.05% higher at 5,438.38 points on Wednesday.


GLOBAL MARKETS Asian shares wobbled while the dollar was perched near a three-month top on Thursday after a spate of economic data overnight appeared to support Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell's hawkish guidance on further interest rate increases.


ERDOGAN President Tayyip Erdogan will meet with the leader of the Great Unity Party (BBP), a member of his AK Party's alliance (1330 GMT).


CENBANK DATA Turkey's central bank will release weekly data on reserves and Turks' forex holdings (1130 GMT).


OPPOSITION An executive committee of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) will hold a meeting (1100 GMT), while IYI Party leader Meral Aksener will visit earthquake victims in Ankara (1400 GMT).


WOMEN'S DAY PROTEST Turkish riot police fired pepper spray to disperse a group of protesters pushing back against a line of police on Wednesday as a rally to mark International Women's Day was winding down in central Istanbul.


GAS HUB Turkey's ruling AK Party presented a draft law to parliament on Wednesday aimed at establishing a competitive natural gas market as the country attempts to become a gas trading hub bringing together suppliers and consumers.


PRO-KURDISH PARTY Two parties in Turkey's main opposition bloc said they would support talks with the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) on backing their challenger to Tayyip Erdogan in elections on May 14, despite concern it would deter nationalist voters.


STARGAZER Turkey cannot recover a 6,000-year-old marble idol from Christie's and hedge fund billionaire Michael Steinhardt after waiting an unreasonably long time to claim it had been looted, a U.S. appeals court ruled on Wednesday.
