JOHANNESBURG, March 17 (Reuters) - The following scheduled economic events, equity and currency market moves may affect South African markets on Friday.


ECONOMIC EVENTS Treasury bill auction Inflation-linked bond auction


SOUTH AFRICAN MARKETS The South African rand was flat on Thursday, after plummeting a day earlier when a U.S. banking crisis spread to Europe and led to a sharp deterioration in global risk appetite. GLOBAL MARKETS Asian markets extended a risk rally on Wall Street on Friday to end a week that saw a brewing banking crisis send bond yields plunging while market participants sharply lowered expectations of future interest rate hikes in Western economies. WALL STREET A strong rebound by financials helped Wall Street's main indexes close firmly positive on Thursday, after some of the country's largest lenders came to the rescue of embattled First Republic Bank. GOLD Gold prices rose on Friday, buoyed by a weaker dollar, and were poised for their biggest weekly gain since mid-November as the global banking crisis sent investors flocking to the safe-haven metal.
