SOUTH AFRICAN MARKETS South African stocks fell on Friday after a plunge in European banking shares shook up the local market, while the rand weakened against a stronger U.S. dollar. GLOBAL MARKETS Asian shares struggled on Monday while U.S. and European stock futures edged higher on hopes authorities were working to ring fence stress in the global banking system, even as the cost of insuring against default neared dangerous levels. WALL STREET U.S. stocks closed higher on Friday, marking the end of a tumultuous week as Federal Reserve officials calmed investor fears over a potential liquidity crisis in the banking sector. GOLD Gold prices edged down for a second straight session on Monday as the U.S. dollar firmed, while authorities attempted to assuage investor fears of a widespread crisis in the global banking sector.
