MADRID, April 20 (Reuters) - Spain's Bankinter said on Thursday its first quarter net profit rose 19.7% from
the same period in 2022 as lending income soared, offsetting an
extraordinary charge from a new banking tax.
The country's fifth-largest bank by market value reported a
net profit of 184.7 million euros ($202.56 million) in the
January to March period compared to 154 million euros a year
ago. Analysts polled by Reuters expected a 143 million euro net
profit.
The lender said the impact from the banking levy rose to 77
million euros, which was fully booked in the quarter. Many
Spanish lenders, including Bankinter as well as larger Caixabank and Sabadell , have legally challenged the
tax.
Banks across Europe are benefiting from higher interest
rates despite the economic uncertainty.
