Alcoa begins construction of gallium plant in Western Australia teaser image

Alcoa Corporation (NYSE: AA) has started construction of a new gallium production plant in Western Australia, partnering with governments and industry partners from Australia, Japan and the United States, it said on Monday.

The project is located at Alcoa’s Wagerup alumina refinery, in Western Australia.

Gallium is mainly recovered as a byproduct of alumina production from bauxite, rather than mined directly.

The company said the plant is expected to create up to 200 construction jobs and about 20 permanent roles once operational.
