Aug 27 (Reuters) - Futures tracking Canada's main stock index slid on Thursday, as investors assessed quarterly bank earnings from Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CM.TO), and Royal Bank of Canada (RY.TO), alongside the ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.
Futures on the S&P/TSX index were down 0.2% at 2,154.10 points at 6:36 a.m. ET.
CIBC and Royal Bank of Canada both reported a rise in third-quarter profit.
The latest results add to a largely positive spate of bank earnings reported this week.
On the geopolitical front, Qatar's prime minister will visit Tehran on Thursday to pursue mediation efforts after the U.S. and Iran traded recriminations over Washington's promise to increase economic pressure on Iran by targeting its trade partners for sanctions.
Brent crude futures added 0.3%, while West Texas Intermediate crude gained 0.2%
Gold prices were little changed as markets weighed the prospect of fresh policy signals from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at the annual Jackson Hole symposium on Friday.
Investors also focused on the ongoing trade tensions with the U.S. Canada removed seafood and fish products from a list of counter-tariffs on U.S. imports on Wednesday, a day after announcing levies on about $20 billion worth of American products.
President Donald Trump had imposed new 50% tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian imports on Saturday after talks between the two countries collapsed.
