(Kitco News) - "Living legend" mine developer Robert Quartermain, co-chairman of Dakota Gold, said he is mainly interested in the company due to its proximity to the historical Homestake mine in South Dakota.
Quartermain spoke to Kitco at the Rule Symposium Natural Resource Investing 2023 show held in Boca Raton, Florida.
"It mined about 40 million ounces over a 125-year period at high grade, a little over 8 grams or about a quarter of an ounce. We have the strike extent on our Maitland project and we've been drilling it since January of 2022," he said, noting this year's discovery of the JB zone.
"We're about three miles north of the old mine so we've shown proof of concept and that's key, it now means finding more of that material, that occurred in the gold ledges which made up the mineralization in the Homestake mine."
Quartermain, who made his mark in the industry as CEO of Silver Standard Resources, and executive chairman of Pretium Resources, said one of the challenges currently is access to good talent.
"It's getting people into Earth Sciences. Where are we bringing up the students in schools who are going to go to universities and are going to come up with the skill sets and the competencies that we need for the industry?"
Kitco Mining's coverage of the Rule Symposium Natural Resource Investing 2023 was sponsored by G Mining Ventures.
