- Tom Girardi, a former high-profile trial lawyer known for
winning a record settlement for the environmental activist Erin
Brockovich, has been indicted by federal grand juries in Los
Angeles and Chicago on charges that he embezzled more than $18
million from clients.
- Brian Deese, who served as President Biden's top economic
adviser and helped create and negotiate the sweeping economic
legislation that Biden signed into law in his first two years in
office, will leave his position in mid-February.
- Senator Michael Bennet, Democrat of Colorado, called on
Apple Inc and Alphabet's Google to remove
TikTok from their app stores because of national security
concerns, as bipartisan pressure on the Chinese-owned company
escalates.
- The United States has detected what it says is a Chinese
surveillance balloon that has been hovering over the
northwestern United States, the Pentagon said on Thursday, a
discovery that comes days before Secretary of State Antony J.
Blinken's visit to Beijing.
