(Kitco News) - The Sandbox, a blockchain and metaverse platform launched in 2018, allows users to create and sell digital assets, watch live concerts, visit virtual museums, and play video games, said its Co-Founder and COO Sebastien Borget.

"The Sandbox is like a decentralized gaming, virtual world, which you access with an avatar… but it's not only games, [but also] virtual shows, virtual concerts, art galleries, museums, and much more," he said. "And all the content you create or earn is truly yours, thanks to blockchain and NFTs."

Sandbox was originally built on the Ethereum blockchain, but has mostly migrated to Polygon, an Indian blockchain platform.

Borget said that over "400 major brands" had already partnered with Sandbox, and that the company has digital assets from shows like The Walking Dead or Care Bears, as well as from artists like Snoop Dogg and Steve Aoki.

Borget spoke with David Lin, Anchor and Producer at Kitco News, at the Future Blockchain Summit in Dubai.

Transforming Gaming

Traditional video games require a user to create an avatar, a graphical representation of a user. However, this same avatar cannot usually be transported across video games or experiences.

Sandbox changes that, said Borget.

"We're defining a new format of entertainment, starting with an avatar," he explained. "You keep that same avatar across all experiences."

Users can also create their own video games, without knowledge of coding.

"Sandbox has a great no-code game maker as well," said Borget. "Creating is fun and does not require any programming language."

Like many decentralized gaming platforms, Sandbox allows users to earn in-game tokens while gaming. Its native cryptocurrency is SAND, which is currently trading below $1.

"What [Sandbox's] blockchain and NFTs provide is essentially the idea that players can truly own [in-game] currencies, and can exchange between each other and sell it even outside the game," Borget said. "Players choose their engagement and they can earn, because all of the rewards they get are sellable, transferable, and so on."
