(Kitco News) - There are unique opportunities available in the mining investment landscape, particularly for those willing to adopt a contrarian approach, according to Whitney Kofford, MD at Sorbie Bornholm.
“For us, the opportunity always lies in the contrarian play,” Kofford told Kitco Mining on the sidelines of the 2025 Mines Money Conference in Miami. She noted that mining, often overlooked, presents a "great opportunity for all types of investors." A significant area of interest for Sorbie Bornholm is the energy transition.
Sorbie Bornholm is a UK partnership that focuses on direct equity investments in micro, small, and mid-cap companies. It seeks growth stories with clear milestones over the next two to five years.
Kofford emphasized that while short-term thinking poses a risk, a well-defined long-term vision is crucial. "If you have a clearly defined vision and a clear plan of where you want to get to, then how to get there becomes, um, becomes the focus," she explained.
One of the critical factors Sorbie Bornholm assesses is a company's communication of its business strategy. Kofford noted that companies often struggle to articulate their vision, which can be a red flag. “There's a difference between a company that has a vision and a plan, but is not communicating it well, and a company that just doesn't have anything,” she elaborated.
Kofford also underscored the importance of brand personality and emotional connection in mining marketing, emphasizing the need for mining companies to differentiate themselves by leaning into their unique brand voice and making investors feel emotionally connected to their story. “How am I making the investor feel? How am I…making the person on the other side of the camera feel?” she said.
Addressing concerns about valuations, Kofford acknowledged that the game has changed, with investors now seeking cash flow and demonstrated progress. “You have to demonstrate that you're systematically moving towards that goal,” she noted. She also believes that companies that execute well will eventually see an upswing in the market.
When asked about the current trend of share buyback programs, Kofford suggested that companies should evaluate whether this strategy is the most effective way to retain investors.
Ultimately, Kofford stressed the significance of genuine enthusiasm from company CEOs. “I want to invest in an individual who is excited about their working, what they're working on,” she affirmed, noting that passion is palpable and essential for attracting investment.
