Feb 27 (Reuters) - Australian shares are set to open lower on Monday, potentially weighed down by mining stocks on weak commodity prices, with stronger-than-expected U.S. economic data adding to worries of a prolonged cycle of interest rate hikes by the U.S. Federal Reserve.

The local share price index futures fell 0.7%, a 109.0-point discount to the underlying S&P/ASX 200 index close. The benchmark rose 0.3% on Friday.

New Zealand's benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index was down 0.5% in early trade.
