Chile’s Centinela copper mine and two striking unions returned to the negotiating table on Tuesday under a voluntary mediation process aimed at resolving a week-long work stoppage that workers say is affecting operations.

The Distrito Centinela and Minera Esperanza unions began the stoppage last Wednesday after collective contract negotiations with mine owner Antofagasta Minerals (LON: ANTO) failed.

The unions are seeking equal benefits for all workers, regardless of union affiliation.

“Regarding operational activity, the reports the unions have had access to confirm a direct impact,” the unions said in a statement, adding that the number of trucks operating at the mine had been cut in half because of the strike.

The Distrito Centinela and Minera Esperanza unions say their members account for more than 50% of the critical mine operators, including shovel and drill operators, and more than 60% of mining equipment maintenance workers.

According to the unions, the full impact of the strike is expected to be felt in November, when production could fall by half.

When the strike began, Antofagasta Minerals said the striking workers accounted for 22% of the mine’s total workforce and projected production would remain unchanged.
