Copper production in Peru down 11.2% in May, ministry says

(Kitco News) - According to the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Peru (MINEM), copper production in Peru, the world’s second largest copper producing country, amounted to 174,258 tonnes in May 2022, down 11.2% compared to May 2021 (196,270 tonnes).

MINEM said that this negative performance was mainly due to a decrease in copper output by Southern Peru Copper Corporation Sucursal del Perú (-26.8%) because of lower ore grade.

The ministry also noted that in May 2022, Minera Las Bambas S.A. did not report copper production due to the stoppage of its plant as a result of roadblocks.

At the company level, Compañía Minera Antamina S.A. is first with a 21.9% share in total Peru’s copper output in May, followed by Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A. (20.9%) and Southern Peru Copper Corporation (13.6%).

The ministry added that at the regional level, Áncash is first with a 22.1% share in the country’s total copper production in May, followed by Arequipa (21.1%) and Cusco (10.5%).
