(Kitco News) - South Korean electronics and software powerhouse Samsung is showing that blockchain technology has more to offer than facilitating digital payments. The company revealed its Samsung Knox Matrix, a "private blockchain" style security system for its smart devices.

The new system was created in an effort to provide real-time, end-to-end protection for Samsung devices and their users as they go about their daily routines.

The Samsung Knox Matrix security platform offers "defense-grade security certified for use by the many top government agencies around the world," Samsung said, and is designed to help users "navigate the potential security threats that exist simply due to the internet connectivity of one's devices."

The proliferation of smart devices has made our world more interconnected than ever before, but they have also created more attack vectors for nefarious parties to take advantage of. Once one device on a network is compromised, all other devices on that network are put at risk.

"Multi-device protection is the next battlefront for security and privacy," the company said. "This is why Samsung has come up with Samsung Knox Matrix, a revolutionary concept for multi-device protection with next-level security."

Knox Matrix is designed to function "as a user's private blockchain system" where all connected devices participate in "multi-layered mutual monitoring" to help enhance security. In this type of system, each smart device on a network monitors the activity of the other devices and provides shared access.

"In order to protect user's smart home from unauthorized access and to make the login process more convenient, Samsung Knox Matrix will share credentials device-to-device and protect sensitive information even between trusted devices," the release said.

A variety of operating systems will be supported by Samsung Knox, including Android and Tizen, and the platform will provide a unified security SDK.

Samsung partners with Google

To go along Knox Matrix announcement, Samsung has also revealed a new partnership with Google that will focus on improving multi-smart device experiences in the home.

The collaboration will enable Samsung Galaxy phone and tablet users to connect devices between ecosystems using Google's 'Matter' interface, which offers "multi-admin capabilities that allow users to connect devices directly to multiple apps and ecosystems, giving consumers more flexibility and choice."

"The partnership will bring expanded Matter's multi-admin capabilities to market, offering greater flexibility between smart home ecosystems and convenience for new and existing Samsung and Google users," the press release said. "Samsung and Google are building on multi-admin, allowing users to seamlessly find, choose to connect and control Matter-enabled devices through SmartThings or Google Home apps on Android."

The Matter multi-admin feature is expected to be rolled out in the coming weeks.
