(Kitco News) - Zinc production in Peru, the world’s second largest zinc producing country, fell by 23.6% in April 2022.
This was announced by the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Peru (MINEM) in a report released this week.
According to the report, Peru produced 98,938 tonnes of zinc in April 2022, down 23.6% compared to 129,519 tonnes mined in April 2021.
MINEM added that in January-April 2022 period, zinc production in Peru fell by 14.8% to 443,450 tonnes compared to the previous year as a result of a lower output reported by Compañía Minera Antamina S.A. (-8.1%) and Nexa Resources Peru S.A.A. (-17.3%).
At the company level, Compañía Minera Antamina S.A. ranked first accounting for 37.7% of total zinc production in Peru, followed by Volcan Compañía Minera S.A.A. (10.4%) and Nexa Resources Peru S.A.A. (6.9%).
The ministry noted that at the regional level, Áncash maintained its first position accounting for 41.5% of Peru’s total zinc production, followed by Junín (17.4%) and Pasco (14.5%).
