(Kitco News) - According to the latest figures from the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Peru (MINEM), gold production in Peru, the world’s eighth largest gold producing country, was 7,667 kg in May 2022, a decline of 2% compared to 7,824 kg mined in May 2021.
MINEM said that similarly, the domestic gold production of 37,568 kg in January-May 2022 period showed a year-on-year decrease of 1.7% as a result of lower production recorded by Minera Aurifera Retamas S.A. (-28%) and Consorcio Minero Horizonte S.A. (-5.9%), both due to lower gold grade in mined ore.
At the company level, Compañía Minera Poderosa S.A. maintained its first position accounting for 9.9% of total gold production in Peru in May, followed by Minera Yanacocha S.R.L. (9.2%) and Minera Aurífera Retamas S.A. (5.9%).
At the regional level, La Libertad kept the first position accounting for 31.5% of Peru’s total gold production in May, followed by Cajamarca (21.4%) and Arequipa (18.7%).
