(Kitco News) - Lundin Mining reported on Saturday a contractor died at the company's Neves-Corvo Mine in Portugal.
The company said the incident occured late in the evening local time Friday, September 30, 2022. An employee of a materials handling contractor was fatally injured while operating a piece of mobile equipment. It was an isolated incident.
"It is with deep sadness that we report the tragic loss of a contractor colleague. Our thoughts are with the family, friends and our Neves-Corvo team at this difficult time. The safety of our employees and contractors remains our top priority," said Peter Rockandel, President and CEO of Lundin Mining.
Relevant regulatory authorities have been notified. Operations at Neves-Corvo have been voluntarily temporarily suspended.
The processing facility at Neves-Corvo comprises two plants. The copper plant processes copper ores and has a capacity of approximately 2.6 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). The zinc plant, which can process zinc or copper ores, has a capacity of approximately 1.1 mtpa and is currently undergoing a significant expansion to 2.5 mtpa capacity.
