John Robins and the Discovery Group he co-founded have been behind a string of junior explorer takeouts. He talks about the Discovery philosophy and the potent combination of rocks, people and serendipity.

Last month Robins was interviewed by Kitco correspondent Paul Harris at the 2022 Precious Metals Summit Beaver Creek.

Discovery Group has a stable of companies, such as Fireweed Metals (CVE: FWZ), Gold Basin Resources (CVE:GXX) and Kodiak Copper (CVE: KDK).

Last year Discovery Group's Great Bear Resources was acquired by Kinross for C$1.8 billion. An earlier hit was Robin's Kaminak Gold, which was picked up by Goldcorp for $520 million. The transaction occurred in 2016.

Robins singled out Great Bear transaction as being particularly satisfying.

"Finding something in an area of Canada that a lot of people thought was in the wrong geology. [There were] all kinds of reasons why it shouldn't exist," said Robins.

"Through good geology we basically discovered what could be one of Canada's great gold mines."
